What's it about? In Tally's world, your 16th birthday means an operation that changes you from an Ugly to a Pretty. Tally's almost ready for her transformation, and excited about it, but her best friend, Shay, has other ideas. Shay runs away and Tally is faced with an impossible choice: Turn her friend into the authorities or never be allowed to turn pretty.
Will it make a good movie? The dystopian genre is huge at the moment, so we think this was destined for movie screens. It has hoverboards, edge-of-your-seat danger, and with the rise of plastic surgery's popularity, is sure to resonate with today's teens. Add to that the futuristic setting, and this one could be visually mind-blowing.
Franchise potential? There are three books in the series — Uglies, Pretties, and Specials — with a fourth companion novel, Extras, completing the set. It'd make a high-quality trilogy and would be accessible to all countries — after all, celebrity culture is popular everywhere.
Fandom? Westerfeld has a huge online presence. He blogs, tweets, and is one of the more interactive authors when it comes to talking to his readers — that really does go a long way when it comes to fan dedication. The usual fansites and Facebook groups complete the Uglies fandom, which seems to be steadily growing every day.
