(Samuel L. Jackson)
2008's Iron Man; 2010's Iron Man 2; May 6's Thor; July 22's Captain America: The First Avenger
Jackson said it best himself, describing Fury as the "connective tissue" for the other characters to join the Avengers, since that's mostly how he has been used so far. Fury's biggest presence was in Iron Man 2, but that was mainly to chastise Tony Stark, leaving Jackson to remark in July 2009 that "we still haven't moved Nick Fury into the bad-ass zone."
We hope Fury will enter the "bad-ass zone." But like in Iron Man 2, Fury will certainly be there to police the egos of the team. This time, however, he'll have a sidekick in S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders).
In his interview with Collider, Marvel president Kevin Feige said that watching Jackson in the dailies from the first couple days of shooting The Avengers greatly impressed him. "I saw Sam Jackson as Nick Fury — in a slightly redesigned outfit with the eye patch — turning around on the bridge of the [S.H.I.E.L.D.] Helicarrier and I went, 'Oh. That is cooler than anything else. That one shot. That one thing.'"
