6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Directed by: David Fincher
, Rooney Mara
, Christopher Plummer
, Stellan Skarsgard
If you’re unaware of what The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
is about at this point, you’ve shown a remarkable ability to completely avoid all aspects of pop culture for the past three years. Just in case that’s true, the movie is about investigating a string of Swedish murders by way of a journalist and his punk-hacker friend.
Why It's a Contender:
David Fincher’s Social Network
deserved to win the Best Picture award (among others) and the Academy has a history of trying to rectify things like this through later awards. Plus, Fincher’s always at his best when dealing with serial killers and he’s loaded the deck with a great cast. That being said, however brilliant the movie is, he may have a hard time overcoming the Academy's dislike for pulpier flicks to actually come away with a win in this category that traditionally favors biopics and historical dramas.
