8. Mysterio, aka Quentin Beck
Powers: None per se ... though he's been known to put on a kick-ass laser show. Like Batman, Mysterio's just a glorified tinker who has hand-to-hand training - that is, if you believe his repeated claims.
Why he'd make a great movie villain: If you're looking for big, over-the-top visuals, then Mysterio is your man. His "giant bag of tricks" approach to villainy offers Raimi and Co. the ability to really let their imaginations fly and make a truly cinematic movie. Plus, if they want to jump on the 3-D bandwagon, his holographs should offer some amazing opportunities to have objects unnecessarily fly at the audience.
Why he couldn't possibly be taken seriously: Mysterio may talk a big talk, but when push comes to shove he's little more than David Copperfield with a fishbowl on his head. His ability to make rabbits disappear or hypnotize the easily duped are impressive when trying to fool hicks or children. Yet, when his best weapon is just a handgun, he'd probably be better off traveling the country performing for bored kids than facing off against, say, a disgruntled magic-show ticket holder, let alone Spider-Man.
7. Spider Slayers, aka Robots
Powers: As big, metal robots designed to kill Spider-Man, they can do anything a big, metal robot built to kill Spider-Man can. Some also shoot lasers out of their eyes - how cool is that?
Why they would make a great movie villain: The kids love those Transmorphinators, and who are we to judge. Fighting off killer robots of doom may be just what the webslinger needs to stay at the top of the box office.
Why they couldn't possibly be taken seriously: We'll skip the copycat syndrome mentioned above for Carnage, though that also applies, in favor of this question: Why would there be a series of advanced flying death machines solely out to murder Spider-Man? Sure, we like an excuse to have robots crush cities as much as the next person, but even in a superhero movie these things strain plausibility. Pretending Spider Slayers are technologically possible is more difficult than pretending Mysterio can fight.
