The Diary of a Wimpy Kid trailer was posted late last night, exclusively at Yahoo! This morning we got our copy and ran it by a focus group of 6-8 year old boys who love the popular book series. Their reaction was a little underwhelming. There was not a single laugh. In fact, not even a grin was detected. At its conclusion, one of them said, "Why is it made with people? They should've made it drawn with lines." Do you agree? Or were these young critics just grumpy?
As for the live-action cast, our initial report card holds up well. Zachary Gordon (Greg), Devon Bostick (Rodrick), Rachael Harris (Greg's mom), Grayson Russell (Fregley) are solidly in the A-B range.
Steve Zahn is still in danger of failing as Greg's dad.
Now that we see Robert Capron as Rowley (Greg's best friend), we'd like to change our grade from a C+ to a C or C-; Capron is just a little too cherubic.
Chloe Moretz — getting massive buzz for her role as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass — plays an "avant-garde school-paper editor" not featured in the books, so her grade remains Incomplete.
Finally, we get the first a look at Greg's brother Manny, played by twins Connor and Owen Fielding, and they're dead-ringers:
So what do you think? Was a live-action adaptation a mistake or a good choice? After seeing the trailer are you excited? Disappointed? Somewhere in-between? Leave a comment below.
