James Cameron Admits to Advising Arnold Schwarzenegger on New Terminator Movie

A proposed Terminator 5 has been in development since Terminator Salvation was released in 2009, but has had to suffer through a variety of roadblocks, including bankruptcy by rights-holder Halcyon, then being purchased by hedge fund Pacificor. It looked like the franchise was back on track last year, when Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures purchased the Terminator rights with Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Justin Lin (Fast Five) attached for a fifth installment.

Lin's involvement became questionable last September when he reportedly couldn't make Ellison's aggressive production schedule due to his commitment to Fast Six. Seems that was also around the time that James Cameron, director of the first two Terminator movies, started secretly advising Schwarzenegger on another Terminator movie. At least, that's what Cameron admitted in a recent interview with MTV.

James Cameron on Working with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Future

Now that the "Governator," Arnold Schwarzenegger, has completed his second term as 38th governor of California, the question on many people's minds is whether or not he will return to acting and, if so, will he re-team with the man who made him a superstar in The Terminator, writer-director James Cameron. Prior to the opening of Avatar, Cameron said that he thinks Schwarzenegger "wants to come back to Hollywood" and that he was "thinking about things that [they] could do together," but now that Fox has ordered up two more installments of Cameron's Avatar, it appears as if any collaboration between the two titans may be off-screen, rather than on.

Terminator 4 is coming, like it or not.

Variety is reporting that the men behind the rights to the Terminator franchise, Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar, have sold the rights to a privately funded company named Halcyon, which sounds suspiciously like Cyberdyne to me.

Halcyon Co. is headed by entrepreneurs Victor Kubicek (who looks a little like a young Michael Bay) and Derek Anderson.

Neither James Cameron nor a post-governator Arnold Schwarzenegger will be involved in the project.

Although the script isn't finished and there is no cast, director or start date, the movie is already being slated for a summer 2009 release date.

What little is known about the storyline involves another iteration of John Connor, now in his 30's, leading the resistence against the rise of the machines.
