In June, Jim Carrey dropped out of a sequel to 1994's Dumb and Dumber, claiming that he was "frustrated" at the lackluster commitment from studios New Line and Warner Bros. "I would have thought Dumb and Dumber To was a no-brainer, after all it's implied in the title," Carrey explained at the time.
For those that were excited at the prospect of a sequel and then bummed at Carrey's exit, there's good news: the sequel may not be dead after all. During a recent panel for the Television Critics Association, Jeff Daniels told Crave Online that there's still hope that Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne could step in front of cameras again next year.
Jim wants to do it. I want to do it. The Farrellys [writer-directors Peter and Bobby] want to do it. They want to rewrite the script a little bit and they aren’t trying to jam it in before I have to go back and do Newsroom in November. So they’re going, "Why don’t we just do it right? Let’s get everybody organized to go next May or June." If everything works out on the business side, that’s what we’ll do but I think there’s more hope than ever.

Not an April Fool's joke; we checked. A sequel to 1994's Dumb and Dumber will, in fact, start shooting this September. Last October, That's My Boy director Sean Anders and his occasional screenwriting partner John Morris (Mr. Popper's Penguins, Hot Tub Time Machine) were hired to pen the sequel for directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly. Clearly, their script must have hit the mark. While doing press for the siblings' upcoming remake/homage The Three Stooges, Peter revealed that the Dumb and Dumber sequel is gearing up to step in front of cameras this fall.
We're getting set to shoot Dumb and Dumber 2 in September. It's the first sequel we've ever done and we've got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back.

While it doesn't always seem like it these days, not everyone in Hollywood wants to make a sequel. However, after decades of aversion, writer/directors/siblings Bobby and Peter Farrelly admitted they were finally ready for a sequel and are working on a follow-up to 1994's Dumb and Dumber. "We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty-years later in life," said Bobby at the time. "And hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel." It appears they did.

Writer/directors/siblings Bobby and Peter Farrelly mainly toil in comedies — the most recent being Hall Pass — but despite the brothers' success in comedies like 1998's There's Something About Mary and 1994's Dumb and Dumber, the duo have yet to make a sequel. 2003 prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd was made without the Farrelly's involvement, but Bobby told Moviehole that a sequel to Dumb and Dumber is currently being developed.
[Dumb and Dumber] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they’ll be able to quote lines from that — lines that I’ve long forgotten. If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel — and that ball is in motion. We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty-years later in life, and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel.

It seemed like some kind of outrageous experiment when writer/directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly first revealed that the cast for their The Three Stooges movie would include Sean Penn as Larry, Benicio Del Toro as Moe, and Jim Carrey as Curly. Fans quickly voiced their displeasure or, at least, their astonishment at the unusual casting choices.
Once the dust settled, however, Penn left the project, citing "personal reasons," leaving the cast unfinished. Paul Giamatti was soon announced as Penn's replacement, until Penn returned to the movie earlier this year, having settled his personal affairs. Carrey's participation in the movie, however, was in doubt. In a recent interview with MTV, Carrey called the project "dead."

Directors Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly finally found a home for their Three Stooges movie at MGM last year, and it looks like they have finally put together a surprising cast for the movie..
Variety reports that Jim Carrey will play heavier Stooge Curly, and will gain 40 pounds for the role. With Carrey's history in comedies, this isn't as surprising as the next two choices: Academy Award winners Sean Penn as Larry and Benicio Del Toro as Moe.
While neither Penn or Del Toro are strangers to comedies, Penn played the iconoclastic surfer Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Del Toro has made subtle comic turns in both The Usual Suspects and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, however, they are hardly two names that typically come to mind when thinking of the slapstick comedy of The Three Stooges.
The Stooges movie is not a biopic but a complete remake, with a script by the Farrellys, which Bobby described as "Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest." The Farrellys will start shooting this fall for a 2010 release.
