Fans of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead franchise have been pretty vocal about their lack of faith in the upcoming Evil Dead remake, going so far as to boo Bruce Campbell at the New York Comic-Con (NYCC) when he said he was "too old" to play the iconic role of Ash ever again. Of course, that was before they saw any footage from the remake. On Wednesday, a trailer teaser offered proof of what looked like a gory and more tonally serious remake, something remake director Fede Alvarez confirmed to Comic Book Resources at the NYCC.
"It is gory, that’s for sure," said Alvarez. "Sam [Raimi] always says this: 'There’s a fine line between horror and comedy.' You go too far, everybody starts laughing. You hit it in the right place, everybody’s scared to death. So we were always trying to stand on that line. So sometimes gore can be very funny. It’s not that kind of gory film. It has a lot of blood. I would come back home after every day of shooting covered in blood. People on set would have to cover themselves with plastic bags because there was so much splatter." Depending on your loyalty to 1981's The Evil Dead, this could be interpreted as good or bad news. Principal photography has been announced for the the upcoming remake from director Fede Alvarez.
"We found a brilliant artist in Fede Alvarez. As a director, he understands what makes a story work and how to put the pieces together," said Sam Raimi, who wrote and directed the original and is producing the remake along with The Evil Dead actor Bruce Campbell and producer Robert Tapert. "I'm really excited to see this story, that I care deeply about, retold by such a fine storyteller."
Like the original, the Evil Dead remake will follow five friends who travel to a remote cabin and accidentally summon demon spirits who possess the youngsters. Jane Levy (Suburgatory) will lead the cast as Mia, who heads to the cabin to detox from her substance abuse issues with her brother David (Shiloh Fernandez, Red Riding Hood), David's fiancée Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore, Burning Man), and friends Olivia (Jessica Lucas, CW's Melrose Place, Cloverfield) and Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci, Carriers). "This cast of burgeoning talent share the same spirit we had when creating the original," said Tapert. "The desire to deliver an unexpected and outrageously scary movie experience for the audience."

The fourth movie in the cult horror movie series that began in 1981 with writer-director Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead has found a distributor. The horror pic, which will go into production next year under the direction of independent filmmaker Federico "Fede" Alvarez of Uruguay, will be distributed in North America and throughout the world (save France and the U.K.) by Sony Pictures. This makes it the fourth distributor in the franchise's history — New Line distributed The Evil Dead, Paramount Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn and Universal Army of Darkness, aka Evil Dead III. Raimi, original Evil Dead producer Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell, who starred in the first three movies as "Ash" Williams, are producing the Evil Dead remake.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that a remake of director Sam Raimi's 1981 debut, Evil Dead, was in the works. Bruce Campbell even Tweeted in support of the reports, but now the remake has been officially announced by Ghost House Pictures.
Previously reported director Fede (Federico) Alvarez will be at the helm, while Raimi, Campbell, and original Dead producer Robert Tapert will produce the remake, with the three producers discussing the remake in a statement to THR.
