Ian McShane on Being a "Biker Pirate" in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Over the course of three movies, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) has faced an assortment of motley villains, from British naval officers to undead pirates and mythological denizens of the deep. However, in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Disney's reluctant hero will face his greatest threat yet — a "biker pirate" played by Ian McShane. Actually, Sparrow's nemesis in the fourth Pirates movie is the notorious pirate Catbeard, er...Blackbeard, who forces Capt. Jack to help him search for the fabled Fountain of Youth. At least that's how McShane described his character in a recent interview with ContactMusic.
It was a pleasure to shoot [On Stranger Tides]. I was only glad it finished so I could get rid of the beard! It was the heaviest thing — it was like having a dead cat around my face! It was made in three or four pieces and held on by magnets and God knows what else. It took an hour and a half to put on every day. It was sort of spectacular. He was a real biker pirate — it's all black leather.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was written by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, the writers of the previous three Pirates movies, and directed by Rob Marshall (Nine). It is loosely based on the novel On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. Penelope Cruz, Kevin R. McNally, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, and Academy Award–winner Geoffrey Rush also star.
