Writer-director Joe Cornish's Attack the Block is gearing up for its U.K. release; Empire has released a new poster for the occasion. A hit at this year's South by Southwest Festival (SXSW), Attack the Block won the SXSW Audience Award and near universal praise for Cornish's directorial debut. The festival helped win the movie U.S. distribution, though no release date has been set yet.
While Cornish has co-written the screenplay for Steven Spielberg's upcoming The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and the in-development Ant-Man with Shaun of the Dead's Edgar Wright (who produced Attack the Block), Cornish started his career as a comedian on the BBC sketch show The Adam and Joe Show. It's taken a decade for Cornish to finally make his first movie, but Cornish explained to The Skinny that he was "just waiting till I was ready."
My life is littered with abandoned first acts. It took writing with Edgar Wright on Ant-Man to give me a hands-on screenwriting course. Not from the ground up, hopefully, but it gave me the courage and confidence to work something through from beginning to end.
Attack the Block follows a gang of South London hoodlums that end up defending their neighborhood from an alien invasion. Cornish revealed that he was inspired to write the movie after being mugged near his South London home.
“I was struck by how cinematic the kids looked — they were like ninjas or cowboys or bandits in the Wild West. And I thought their vehicles were very science fictional — they were on mopeds and little bikes. Even the weapons that the kids in that area mess around with, the fireworks and the samurai swords that they import and then sharpen, are so cinematic. Everyone has been making these depressing sociological dramas when, actually, all around them was all the equipment you need for an action adventure film.
While the movie is filled with mostly unknown British actors (John Boyega, Simon Howard, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, and Alex Esmail), Attack the Block stars Nick Frost (Paul, Shaun of the Dead) and Luke Treadaway (Clash of the Titans), both of whom are featured in a the latest photos from the movie, along with the first decent look at one of the beasties from outer space.
Attack the Block also features a soundtrack from English House duo Basement Jaxx, and a sample track titled "The Ends" has debuted as well and can be enjoyed below.
