Paul W.S. Anderson to Direct Historical Disaster Movie Pompeii, Skips Resident Evil 5?

In March, Resident Evil 5 (working title) was scheduled for a September 14, 2012, release date, with Sony Screen Gems clearly looking to follow-up the success of 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife as soon as possible. Paul W.S. Anderson has been involved in every Resident Evil movie from the beginning: writing and directing the 2002 original and Afterlife, while writing and producing the other two sequels — 2004's Resident Evil: Apocalypse and 2007's Resident Evil: Extinction.
Anderson's latest movie is an adaptation of The Three Musketeers, a swashbuckling adventure set in the 19th century. Anderson will be going even further into the past for his next movie, the historical disaster movie Pompeii, which is set during the 79 A.D. eruption of Italian volcano Mt. Vesuvius. According to THR, Pompeii will follow a shipping tycoon slave's attempt to save the woman he loves and his best friend while the city is reduced to ash.
Lee Batchler and Janet Scott Batchler wrote the script for Pompeii, which Anderson will direct and produce starting in the spring of 2012. It's possible that Anderson could squeeze in Resident Evil 5 in the winter months, but it seems more likely that Anderson will only produce and allow someone else to direct the fifth installment.
