Charlie Hunnam is most well-known for his work as Jackson "Jax" Teller on the FX Network TV series Sons of Anarchy, but, at one point, screentested for the title role in Marvel Studios' Thor. While Hunnam lost that role to Chris Hemsworth, the British actor is looking to land his first major lead role in director Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.
Deadline reports that Hunnam is negotiating to star in the movie, which will be del Toro's first since dropping out as director of the The Hobbit and having his pet project, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness canceled after Universal balked at the movie's budget and R-rating.
Travis Beacham, who wrote the script for theClash of the Titans remake, scripted Pacific Rim, which is set in a future where "malevolent creatures threaten to destroy the Earth, city by city." Hunnam will play one of the planet's protectors who must use highly advanced weapons technology to eradicate the threat.
Further details on Pacific Rim have been scarce, with rumors revealing in March that the movie will see del Toro create "two worlds," one being an alternate Earth and the other being the universe the Godzilla-like creatures come from.
Pacific Rim is reportedly aiming for a 2013 release date.
