Much has been made of the otherworldly or Star Wars-esque aspects of director Martin Campbell's (Casino Royale) Green Lantern that help to set this comic book adaptation apart from the plethora of superhero movies that have come before it or that will be debuting this summer. However, in addition to the threat of Parallax, a galactic fear-entity that the 7,200-strong members of the Green Lantern Corps of intergalactic peacekeepers must contend with, novice Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) of Earth must also face off against the terrifying terrestrial threat of Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard), a scientist who gains psionic powers after coming into contact with a mysterious meteor (that, from the looks of it, might be infected with an aspect of Parallax). While much of the previous marketing for the movie has been focused on Hal Jordan or the Green Lantern Corps, Sarsgaard's Hammond is finally getting his due, first with additional footage of the character in the new theatrical trailer, and now with his very own character poster.
Green Lantern is based on the classic DC Comics character created by John Broome and Gil Kane that first appeared in Showcase #22 (October 1959). The screenplay was written by Michael Green, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim. The story follows cocky test pilot Hal Jordan as he is inducted into the Green Lantern Corps following the death of Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison), the alien Lantern tasked with watching over Earth, at the "hands" of Parallax. Hal is instructed in the use of his power ring by veteran Lanterns Sinestro (Mark Strong), Kilowog (digital character voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan) and Tomar-Re (digital character voiced by Academy Award-winner Geoffrey Rush ), but he must learn to overcome his own doubts and fears if he hopes to survive an encounter with Parallax. The cast includes Blake Lively as Hal's employer and love interest, Carol Ferris, Angela Bassett as Amanda Waller and Academy Award-winner Tim Robbins as Senator Hammond.
