Joel Edgerton Joins The Great Gatsby

Australian actor Joel Edgerton has landed the role of Tom Buchanan in director Baz Luhrmann's 3-D adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Ben Affleck was originally cast as Buchanan, but his directing schedule prohibited Affleck from playing the role.
Edgerton's character of Buchanan is a critical role, married to Daisy (Carey Mulligan), who is the love interest for the title character of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). Isla Fisher will play Buchanan's mistress Myrtle, who plays a vital part of the book's ending. Luhrmann sent Deadline a picture of the actor in character (at left) and revealed that Edgerton perfectly fits the role.
In casting Tom one had to find an actor who could credibly be (as Fitzgerald describes him) "one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven," had five-star acting chops and in the big dramatic showdown scenes between Gatsby and Tom, hold the screen against Leonardo DiCaprio, in the appropriate age group. Any wonder, it has been a long and thorough journey. The simple truth is that Joel came into our rehearsal space in New York and fulfilled all of the above criteria, and then some.
Edgerton got his first break playing Uncle Owen in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith, which translated into starring roles in the upcoming MMA fighting drama Warrior in September and The Thing prequel in October.
Edgerton also recently screentested for the lead roles in Universal's The Bourne Legacy, but lost out to Jeremy Renner. Edgerton won his Great Gatsby role over fellow Bourne Legacy screentester Luke Evans, who also auditioned for the Buchanan role.
The Great Gatsby starts shooting in Australia this August (yes, in 3-D), and will open possibly in 2012. Tobey Maguire will play Nick Carraway, the book's narrator, and Australian newcomer Elizabeth Debicki will play Jordan Baker, Daisy's long time friend.
