Jennifer Lawrence drew mixed reactions from fans when it was announced she would star as Katniss Everdeen in the movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. The dark hair and tough demeanor she displays on the cover of this week's EW, should allay some fans' fears.
While the interview with EW that took place during her training at an archery range and track, Lawrence reveals that it was her experience as an Oscar nominee put her in a position to empathize with the character Katniss. She rehashed a conversation with Hunger Games director Gary Ross.
He was asking me what the experience was like, and I just kind of opened up and said, ‘I feel like a rag doll. I have hair and makeup people coming to my house every day and putting me in new, uncomfortable, weird dresses and expensive shoes, and I just shut down and raise my arms up for them to get the dress on, and pout my lips when they need to put the lipstick on.’ And we both started laughing because that’s exactly what it’s like for Katniss in the Capitol. She was a girl who’s all of a sudden being introduced to fame. I know what that feels like to have all this flurry around you and feel like, ‘Oh, no, I don’t belong here.
Lawrence also revealed that she loved the story and that if she had said no to the part she would have "regret it every day," but she also admits that she had her doubts as well.
I knew that as soon as I said yes, my life would change. And I walked around an entire day thinking ‘It’s not too late, I could still go back and do indies, I haven’t said yes yet, it’s not too late."
If she still had some doubts, they were probably erased by Suzanne Collins, herself. After Lawrence signed on, she received a call from Collins who said "I feel like when you said yes, the world got lifted off my shoulders."
The Hunger Games also stars Elizabeth Banks, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, as well as many others.
