20th Century Fox has been releasing a series of character posters in its international marketing campaign for the upcoming X-Men: First Class, and the latest poster (via Comic Book Movie) features Zoë Kravitz as her character Angel Salvadore.
One of the newer First Class characters (first appearing in the 2001 Marvel comic book New X-Men #118), Angel shares a name with another X-Man named Angel, founding member Warren Worthington III. When Kravitz was first cast, there was a little confusion that the No Reservations actress was playing the Worthington Angel, who was a member of the first X-Men team and the one included in the X-Men: First Class comic book written by Jeff Parker and illustrated by Roger Cruz. But the "Angel" Kravitz is playing may have wings, but has other abilities as well, Kravitz told IGN.
I play Angel Salvador, and I'm a go-go dancer who can fly. I have a pair of tattooed wings on my back, which turn into insect wings, and I projectile vomit acid.
Kravitz called working with director Matthew Vaughn an "amazing" experience and admitted she would "freak out" every time she would see Kevin Bacon on set. Bacon plays movie adversary Sebastian Shaw, and Kravitz says she is in "a bunch of scenes" with the actor. The actress explained why she appears with Bacon, but gives away [WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS], well, spoilers.
She starts out on the good side with Professor X and Magneto - they recruit her to be an X-Man, and then she switches to Sebastian Shaw's side to be in Hellfire. I think it's just a different approach to fighting for human equality. Someone compared the two different sides. In this film it's Hellfire and the X-Men, but later it's Xavier and Magneto and someone compared it to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. They're really fighting for the same thing, but it's different approaches for how to get there. I think she just believes that the aggressive side is the right side.
Kravitz says her character gets into some action scenes, particularly "at the end there's a big fight scene and I get to soar through the air and projectile vomit and attack the X-Men."
Kravitz also gets to say her first revealed line in one of the latest TV spots, one of many in a long succession of Fox's omnipresent TV trailers.
Another new ad features snippets of new footage from First Class while also attempting to recruiting new recruits into the U.S. Army, not unlike the NBA/TNT ad that mixed First Class footage with basketball highlights.
Early reviews for First Class have been excellent so far, which comes as welcome news to the rabid fan base eagerly anticipating the prequel's release.
First Class co-stars James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee, January Jones as Emma Frost, Oliver Platt as The Man in Black, Lucas Till as Havok, Edi Gathegi as Darwin, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Jason Flemying as Azazel, and Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert.
