Idris Elba is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. An accomplished actor in his native Britain before gaining wider recognition for the role of Russell "Stringer" Bell in The Wire TV series, Elba impressed in a succession of supporting roles in movies like 28 Weeks Later, American Gangster, RocknRolla, and The Losers. Those movies earned him a spot in two big-budget movies based on Marvel superheroes, Thor, which is still in theaters, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which is currently in post-production.
Elba is currently filming Prometheus, acclaimed director Ridley Scott's highly anticipated return to the Alien franchise that he helped launch, and there's talk that he is in contention with Will Smith for the lead role in Quentin Tarantino's new Western, Django Unchained. Now, TheWrap has reported that Legendary Pictures is eyeing Elba to star opposite Charlie Hunnam in Guillermo del Toro's next movie as a director, Pacific Rim.
Not much has been revealed about Pacific Rim thus far. The script was written by Clash of the Titans remake scribe Travis Beacham and is supposedly "set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth," requiring humanity to "band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace." It's unknown what role Hunnam will play in the movie, which Legendary is hoping will turn into a sci-fi franchise tentpole for the studio, or what role Legendary might have in mind for Elba.
Back in March, NewsInFilm
claimed to have gotten a peek at the script
, reporting that the story takes place on two worlds and that it centers around a war between "a variety of gigantic monsters" and humans piloting "massive, building-sized mechanized suits of armor," all of which sounds awesome, but must be considered rumor until there is some official confirmation otherwise. If we are to assume that NewsInFilm
actually did manage get a look at the script, then it's likely that Hunnam is playing one of the mech suit pilots and that Elba is being considered to play his partner, as it supposedly takes "teams of two pilots to jointly operate" the battle suits.
Pacific Rim does not yet have a start date or a release date.
