Two More Join Director Ruben Fleischer's The Gangster Squad; Zombieland 2 Could Follow

The Gangster Squad is growing.
In May, Anthony Mackie was reportedly up for a role in either Gangster Squad or director Marc Forster's adaptation of Max Brooks' best-selling novel, World War Z. Mackie later dismissed the casting rumors as "speculation," but Variety reports that at least one of them had some truth to it as Mackie will join the cast of Gangster Squad as former LAPD lieutenant Rocky Washington.
Based on a seven-part LA Times article called "Tales from the Gangster Squad" written by Paul Lieberman, Gangster Squad was scripted by former Los Angeles Police Dept. Officer Will Beall and will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) when cameras start rolling this September. The movie chronicles the efforts of a 1940s police force out together in secret to rid Los Angeles of crime and corruption stemming from East Coast mafia figures like Mickey Cohen, played in the movie by Sean Penn.
Josh Brolin was cast in April as Sgt. Jack O'Mara, one of the eight men on the squad, while Ryan Gosling will play the womanizing Sgt. Jerry Wooters. Michael Pena (Crash, and Fleischer's upcoming comedy 30 Minutes or Less) will play an officer with a Mexican heritage who is "eager to prove himself to the squad," Reuters reports.
Fleischer recently confirmed Pena's casting while doing press for 30 Minutes or Less, and was asked if he would be moving on to Zombieland 2, the sequel to his successful directorial debut, to which Fleischer responded: "I hope so."
I know that [original stars Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin] and I all really want to do it so hopefully we'll be able to do it, maybe after Gangster.
has no scheduled release date so far, but is expected to open in 2013.
