Cars' Fillmore 2.0: Volkswagen Has a New Minibus

Cars 2 opens on Friday, and a new version of the movie's characters may be available soon as well. Volkswagen revealed a new VW Minibus (aka Bulli) concept car in the spring, and its slick new styling looks nothing like hippie-inspired Fillmore, with his hand-painted flowers and peace symbols. Despite those differences, the new concept car has a lot in common with the Volkswagen Type 2 minibus that appears in the Cars sequel.
What are these similarities? First, Fillmore owns an organic fuel shop and believes that gasoline companies are lying to the public. The new Bulli also doesn't rely on gas companies, because it is powered by an electric motor. Fillmore gives customers options as his fuel shop sells gas in several flavors, and the new VW minibus offers the options of gas or diesel direct injections, as well as an electric version. The new concept car is fitted with an "infotainment control" via iPad and, legend has it, that in 1976 Steve Jobs sold his VW microbus, along with an HP scientific calculator, to help raise the $1,300 he and Steve Wozniak needed to launch Apple Computer.
Fillmore was originally voiced by George Carlin and is now voiced by Lloyd Sherr. The character's name is a reference to the Fillmore East, a venue that was an epicenter for rock performances throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In Cars 2 Fillmore will be the fuel expert at the World Grand Prix for Team Lightning McQueen.
