James Cameron Updates Avatar 2 and Avatar 3

Since making the highest–grossing movie of all time with 2009's Avatar, James Cameron has remained relatively quiet, executive producing the underwater adventure movie Sanctum and advising various directors on the wonders of 3-D (and, in some cases, deriding them for their use of the format).
Unsurprisingly, Cameron has also been hard at work on Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, which he told Fox News were both still in the script phase.
We're shooting two films back-to-back, so I'm writing two scripts, not one, which will complete a [thr]ee-film story arc — not really a trilogy, but just an overall character arc so I’m pretty excited about that.
While some might feel pressure trying to follow up the enormous success of a movie like Avatar, Cameron isn't worried about his sequels.
There's always an expectation. I had to deal with that after The Terminator back in 1984. All of a sudden I had a big hit movie and it was "what are you doing next?" But my job is take the audience on a journey and entertain them. "The second I am sitting down writing, I just go to Pandora. I don't think about that stuff, about standing on a red carpet. It has its own life, really. The characters have their own lives.
Cameron is also working to put together his giant studio in Manhattan Beach, California, which will house the production on the two sequels and, reportedly, provide over 700 jobs to visual effects artists and other crew members.
We're doing a lot of preliminary work right now on new software and new animation techniques and so on. We’re creating a new facility in Manhattan Beach so everybody that's not already dead is coming back.
Cameron and 20th Century Fox are planning a Christmas 2014 release for Avatar 2 and a Christmas 2015 release for Avatar 3. Production will reportedly begin later this year.
