Idris Elba Confirmed for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim

Earlier this month, we reported that Guillermo del Toro was interested in casting Luther star Idris Elba as the lead in his alien doomsday flick Pacific Rim. Today, Deadline reports that the casting has been confirmed. Son of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam will co-star. Elba has been cast in the role of Sensi, one of the human collective defending the Earth from alien attacks. The role was originally meant for Tom Cruise, who departed the project for unknown reasons.
Elba was reportedly being considered along with Jamie Foxx and Will Smith to star in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, but Tarantino apparently tried very hard to court Smith, who eventually passed. Now that Elba has joined Pacific Rim, Deadline speculates that Foxx will likely get the part for Django.
Add del Toro's movie to an already growing list of projects on Elba's resume. The 38-year-old London native appeared in Thor and will star in Ghost Rider: Spirit of the Vengeance. He is also currently filming Ridley Scott's Prometheus.
