Don Cheadle Discusses Whether He Will Return for The Avengers and Iron Man 3

In January, Don Cheadle confirmed that his Iron Man 2 character, Lt. James "Rhodey" Rhodes, a.k.a War Machine, has a spin-off movie in the works, but he may be seen in a different Marvel movie first. In an interview with Collider, Cheadle mentioned he would appear in Iron Man 3 and revealed the start date for the sequel.
Well the Iron Man 3 is coming back. We’ll probably do that again in February and there’s talk of a War Machine spinoff, which I guess, unless I get recast, I would probably do.
Cheadle's involvement in Iron Man 3 is a bit of a surprise, as writer-director Shane Black won the Iron Man 3 directing job by pitching a story that puts Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, into a Tom Clancy–inspired thriller where the character fights "real world villains" and would avoid using the other characters from the upcoming The Avengers. However, Cheadle maintains that he won't take part in The Avengers. "Not this one that they're shooting right now," said Cheadle.
Me being in The Avengers? I have a contract to be in The Avengers but I’m glad they haven’t exercised that option yet. I need some down time.
Jon Favreau, who directed the first two Iron Man movies recently revealed that it might be difficult to have Tony Stark go from The Avengers, which pulls in the other characters from Marvel's Cinematic Universe and puts them onto one team, and go on a solo adventure. "What are you gonna say? 'They all just lost their cell phones and you can’t get help?'" remarked Favreau. Yet that seems to be plan, with Cheadle's War Machine around to help out.
Black is co-writing Iron Man 3 with screenwriter Drew Pearce, and with a release date of May 3, 2013, already in place, Cheadle's comment about a February start date seems to make sense. Robert Downey Jr. will return as Tony Stark, and Gwyneth Paltrow said she would "possibly" reprise her role as Pepper Potts in Iron Man 3.
