Edward Norton in Talks to Play Villain in The Bourne Legacy; Rachel Weisz Joins the Cast

Ever since Edward Norton was ousted and later replaced (with Mark Ruffalo) as Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, in Marvel Studios' big super-team movie, The Avengers, the two-time Academy Award-nominated actor has shied away from big studio productions. However, it now appears as if Norton might be hitting the big screen in a summer event movie just a few months after The Avengers debuts. According to Variety, Norton is "in negotiations" in star opposite Jeremy Renner as the villain in Universal's The Bourne Legacy.
Like the previous three movies in the franchise — The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum — The Bourne Legacy is based on characters and situations created by Robert Ludlum. Unlike the previous movies, however, this new movie does not star Matt Damon as brainwashed Treadstone covert operative Jason Bourne. In fact, Bourne doesn't even appear in the movie. Instead, Renner will play another Bourne-like agent from the same covert agency. Think of it as a spin-off movie taking place in the same universe, leaving open the possibility for Damon/Bourne to return in a future movie. As writer-director Tony Gilroy put it, "Jason Bourne is still alive and out there in the world [of The Bourne Legacy]."
The Variety article also revealed that actress Rachel Weisz has joined the cast of the movie. No details were provided about the character she will play, however.
