It doesn't open for another two days, but according to Deadline the final chapter of the Harry Potter saga already has record-breaking box office numbers.
Right now, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 accounts for 91% of Fandango's daily ticket sales, and the 3-D ticket sales alone have the highest ticket sales of any movie on Fandango for this year. This means, that just the 3-D sales have already beat out the pre- and post-release Fandango ticket sales for The Hangover Part II, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon with 48 hours to go until the official release.
Deathly Hallows: Part 2 will be shown 4,375 theaters, on 11,000 screens. 3-D screenings will be at 3,000 locations, a motion picture industry record, and on 4,250 screens. The total theaters also include 274 IMAX venues and another 120 with Premium Large Format cinemas. There will also be 270 drive-ins showing the final Harry Potter movie, another industry record. Who knew there were even that many drive-ins left to show it?
Warner Bros. is also anticipating 300 Harry Potter marathons playing the first seven movies followed by the final movie showing at midnight on Friday, while 1,100 theaters are planning to show Deathly Hallows: Part 1 on Thursday night, followed immediately by a screening of Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
According to Box Office Mojo, Harry Potter is already the highest-grossing movie franchise in history, with a total gross of a little over $2 billion. With the U.S. release of the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 still to come, no telling how much higher that number will get.
