Paramount is already getting the promotion going for Paranormal Activity 3 by handing out flyers for a fake business called Darren's Timeless Memories at the San Diego Comic-Con. The offical website of the company is a viral site that ultimately leads to the teaser trailer for the movie. The trailer shows that the third installment will be a prequel which explores the childhood of Katie (played by Katie Featherston in the previous movies) and her sister Kristi (played by Sprague Hayden in Paranormal 2).
Director Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity captivated audiences with its "found footage" storytelling style that chronicled a young couple dealing with a spirit living in their house with them. After earning $193 million in worldwide box office, Paramount smelled franchise potential and made last year's Paranormal Activity 2, which earned an impressive $176 million worldwide, and caused the studio to schedule a release date for Paranormal Activity 3 barely a month after releasing Paranormal 2.
Screenwriter Christopher B. Landon and directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish) were brought on board in May, and production on the sequel began last month. Peli recently talked to Bloody-Disgusting about creating #3, which is scheduled to hit theaters on October 21.
The challenge we are dealing with is to create same kind of dreaded feeling of terror and horror, while at the same time also [delivering] something fresh, different and unique. [I am] hoping fans will be pleasantly pleased.
