Emma Stone likely won't be reuniting with director Ruben Fleischer for a sequel to 2009's Zombieland anytime soon, but the actress is joining the cast of Fleischer's latest project, Warner Bros.' Gangster Squad.
The movie — based on writer Paul Lieberman's seven-part series of articles for The LA Times, "Tales from the Gangster Squad" — will follow a secret squad of 1940's police officers who work to keep East Coast mobsters like "Mickey" Cohen out of Los Angeles. Variety reports that Stone will also reunite with her Crazy, Stupid, Love co-star Ryan Gosling, playing a "sharp-tongued siren" named Jean who is caught in a love triangle between Gosling (the womanizing Sgt. Jerry Wooters) and Cohen (Sean Penn).
Production on Gangster Squad is expected to begin in September. The movie co-stars Josh Brolin, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, and Michael Pena. Former South Central Los Angeles cop and novelist Will Beall wrote the script.
Matt Damon may be out of the stand-alone Bourne spin-off The Bourne Legacy, but several of his co-stars are not.
Variety reports that Joan Allen and Albert Finney are in negotiations to reprise their respective roles from the Bourne trilogy in Legacy, which will star Jeremy Renner as an agent with the same training as Damon's Jason Bourne. Finney popped up only in The Bourne Ultimatum, the third of the trilogy, as Operation Treadstone's behavior-modification expert Dr. Albert Hirsch, while Allen appeared in both Ultimatum and The Bourne Supremacy as FBI Agent Pamela Landy.
Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton), who worked on the script for all three Bourne movies, will write and direct Legacy for Universal Pictures, which has already cast Edward Norton as the movie's villain, Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Sucker Punch) as brainwashed assassin "Number 3", and Rachel Weisz in an unspecified role.
Legacy reportedly will not ignore Damon's Bourne. Gilroy has explained that Bourne is "still alive and out there in the world" during Legacy, leaving the door open for Damon to inevitably return as the character.
