Denis Leary Confirms His Return as 'Capt. Stacy' in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Even though the opening of The Amazing Spider-Man is still eleven months away, Sony Pictures recently announced that it was putting The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on the calendar, setting its release date just shy of two years from the release of the first. It's known that title star Andrew Garfield has a multi-picture contract to appear as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and it's likely that Emma Stone and two-time Academy Award-winner Sally Field will be back as Gwen Stacy and Aunt May Parker, respectively, considering how important they are in Peter's life in the comic books, but now we have confirmation that at least one other supporting cast member will be back. In a recent interview with Collider in which he mainly discusses the series finale of his FX TV drama Rescue Me, Denis Leary confirmed that he will be back as Gwen's dad, Capt. George Stacy.
You might be thinking, "How is it significant that Leary will be returning as Capt. Stacy in the sequel? Isn't he an important supporting character, as well?" Yes, he is, but it's significant that he will be back because Capt. Stacy is one of the many casualties of Spider-Man's superhero lifestyle in both the regular Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe. In the Marvel Universe, Capt. Stacy approves of Peter Parker dating Gwen, knows that Peter is Spider-Man, and dies at the hands of Spider-Man's villain, Doctor Octopus. In the Ultimate Universe, Capt. Stacy doesn't approve of Spider-Man and is murdered by the Chameleon impersonating Spider-Man, which causes Gwen to hate Spider-Man. Considering Webb is sticking pretty close to the source material, it seems likely that Capt. Stacy is going to get it sooner or later, but apparently it will not be at the hands of the Lizard.
Leary wouldn't say much more about his role, explaining that "every time you say something about this f*cking movie, they go crazy," referring to the studio. However, he did have high praise for the young stars of the movie.
[Andrew's] terrific in the role. He was trained as a gymnast, when he was growing up in England, which came in handy. Most of the stunts in the movie are done live, in front of the cameras. There’s a ton of stuff. He’s just a terrific actor. I really loved working with him. I thought he was great. Same thing with Emma. They’re actually more mature than I am, so that says a lot. They’re really incredibly talented and really professional. She’s 22 years old. I don’t want to tell you what I was doing when I was 22 years old. I was very impressed by her.
The Amazing Spider-Man was written by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent. The cast includes Rhys Ifans, Campbell Scott, Annie Parisse, Julianne Nicholson, Irrfan Khan, C. Thomas Howell and Chris Zylka.
