Open Road Films has announced that director Joe Carnahan's latest movie, The Grey, will finally be released on January 27, 2012. The Grey is part of the inaugural slate of movies for the distribution company.
The action-packed survival thriller reunites Carnahan with his The A-Team star Liam Neeson, and may open in New York and Los Angeles before the end of the year to allow for a possible Oscar campaign for Neeson's performance. Ironically, Neeson's role was originally cast with Bradley Cooper, but after Cooper dropped out, Neeson took over. Bummer for Bradley, but the synopsis does sound like the actors had to withstand a great deal of cold weather (which makes it harder to keep your abs tanned).
In The Grey, Liam Neeson leads an unruly group of oil-rig roughnecks when their plane crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. Battling mortal injuries and merciless weather, the survivors have only a few days to escape the icy elements — and a vicious pack of rogue wolves on the hunt — before their time runs out.
The cast for The Grey includes Frank Grillo (the upcoming Warrior), Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend's Wedding), Dallas Roberts (3:10 To Yuma), Joe Anderson (The Crazies), James Badge Dale (the upcoming World War Z, HBO’s The Pacific), and Nonso Anozie (the upcoming Conan The Barbarian).
Carnahan wrote the script for The Grey with Ian McKenzie Jeffers, while Ridley Scott and Tony Scott produced.
