Details are still scarce at this point, but Disney announced at its D23 Expo on Saturday that Pixar is in the process of developing two new original animated movies, one each from the two co-directors of Pixar's Academy Award-winning 2009 release, Up. The first, slated for a Christmas 2013 release, will be directed by Bob Peterson and was announced as The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dinosaurs. The second, slated for a Summer 2014 release, will be directed by Pete Doctor and was introduced as The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside the Mind.
Beyond the title graphics, Disney/Pixar did not have much in the way of artwork from either project to display at D23 and didn't really offer much more in the way of information about the plots of either movie or the talent involved. However, following the announcement, Disney/Pixar tweeted the following:
From director Pete Doctor comes an inventive new film that explores a world that everyone knows, but no one has seen: inside the human mind.
What if that life-changing asteroid missed Earth? Director Bob Peterson's hilarious tale depicts a world where dinosaurs never went extinct.
Pixar's next release, Brave, will be the studio's first fairy tale and has been described as more mature and somewhat darker in tone than previous releases. It centers around Merida (voiced by Kelly MacDonald), a princess living in the Scottish Highlands whose strong will and determination to carve her own path in life inadvertently unleash chaos on the kingdom, forcing her to discover the true meaning of bravery. Brave opens in theaters June 22, 2012.
