Michael Bay's third and final Transformers adaptation, Transformers: Dark of the Moon was not the best reviewed movie of the year, but it was one of the most popular. The box office juggernauts took in $348 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing movie of 2011 behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. If you're bummed because you never got a chance to see it or to see it in the IMAX format, you're in luck — Dark of the Moon is returning to 246 IMAX theaters for an encore performance running from Friday, August 26th through Thursday, September 8th.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon was written by Ehren Kruger. The story takes place three years after the events in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and centers around the discovery of a crashed spaceship from Cybertron (the Transformers' home planet) on the moon, a discovery kept secret by the U.S. government since the 1960s. When the Autobots learn of the spaceship, called The Ark, they journey to the moon, where they uncover a Decepticon plot to enslave humanity and replace the Earth with Cybertron. Shia LaBeouf headlines the cast that includes Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, John Malkovich, Patrick Dempsey, Alan Tudyk, John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson and Academy Award-winner Frances McDormand.
