Fireflies in the Garden Trailer Debuts, Stars Ryan Reynolds and Julia Roberts

2011 was going to be the "year of Ryan Reynolds" with the actor appearing in the superhero adaptation of Green Lantern and the r-rated body-switching comedy The Change-up. Instead of Reynolds being catapulted into super-stardom, however, both movies flopped.
Reynolds will get his third chance this year at winning over an audience with the family drama Fireflies in the Garden, which casts Reynolds as the novelist son of kind mother Julia Roberts and cruel father Willem Dafoe. While the cast is certainly impressive, there's only one reason the movie might not be Reynolds' box office redemption: it was shot three years ago and is being self-distributed by the movie's producers.
It's not as bad as it sounds. Written and directed by Dennis Lee, who won a student Academy Award for his short Jesus Henry Christ, the semi-autobiographical movie was screened at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008 and opened in several European markets, but when production company Senator Entertainment shut down in 2009, so did the movie.
Three years later, the producers regained the rights to Fireflies and are self-distributing it in New York and Los Angeles this October, with hopes of widening the release after that. The delay gave Lee the opportunity to re-cut the movie, and appreciate the long road its taken to reach theaters.
"I am so pleased our film will finally get a theatrical release in the U.S.," Lee told Variety. "Anyone familiar with our story knows the road to this moment has been paved with challenges. It's not lost on me how much care and determination it took to bring Fireflies to light."
See if Fireflies has been worth the wait in the first trailer below.
The cast of Fireflies also includes Hayden Panettiere, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss and Ioan Gruffudd.
