Thor DVD/Blu-ray Extra: Joss Whedon and "The Road to The Avengers"

When Thor is released on home video Sept. 13th, it will be chock-full of extra content, from extended and deleted scenes to a collection of featurettes that delve into the making of the movie from pre- to post-production. The home video releases will also include an original Marvel Cinematic Universe short staring
Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson — we got a preview of it last month — and a featurette about Marvel's currently-in-production super-team movie, The Avengers.
Titled "The Road to The Avengers," the featurette about "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" has just been made available for viewing online and, while it contains no new footage the movie, it is a cool "sizzle reel" for the movie and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in general. With commentary from writer-director Joss Whedon, producer Kevin Feige and the Black Widow herself, Scarlett Johansson, the featurette contains footage from all of Marvel's movies, as well as from the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con panel presentation at which the full cast was assembled for the very first time.
Whedon said that The Avengers will be unlike any other superhero movie to date because of the large cast of "extraordinary actors playing these extraordinary characters."
What we're doing here is completely unprecedented. Marvel is taking all of the characters that they're putting in their movies and bringing them all together in a team franchise movie experience, which really has never been done before.
The idea of them being a team is what fuels the film. The idea that they're going to find something in each other that they didn't have before. As "The Avengers," they can fight something bigger.
The plot of The Avengers is still a mystery, but we know that Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) mischievous brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), has something to do with the team's troubles, and recent information points to an alien invasion, possibly by the shape-shifting Skrulls. The cast includes Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson, Cobie Smulders S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill, Samuel L. Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury and Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig.
