The Avengers Production Update: Full Cast "Assembled" on the NYC Set

Production began on Marvel Studios' biggest, most ambitious comic book adaptation to date, The Avengers, back in April, but "The Road to The Avengers" actually began in 2008 in Iron Man, with a cameo appearance by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. According to director Jon Favreau, Fury's "Avenger Initiative" reference in Iron Man was "just a joke," but it became a "self-fulfilling prophecy." When he began rolling on Iron Man 2, Favreau said that a "big part" of Marvel's "agenda" for the movie was "to set up The Avengers" movie. Subsequent movies Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger have also served that agenda, with references to the other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe woven throughout.
Marvel first "assembled" its Avengers cast in a standing-room-only panel presentation at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con that included the introduction of the two newest members to the team, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo as Hawkeye and the new Hulk (replacing Edward Norton), respectively. Amateur photographers and paparazzi have been scrambling to capture photos or video footage of the team together ever since writer-director Joss Whedon began filming in Albuquerque, N.M., The Albuquerque shoot yielded little, but we got to see Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) team up to battle an unknown menace (their opponents were wearing motion-capture suits, which implies CGI enemies) when the production was set up in Cleveland, Ohio. The Avengers recently began filming in New York City and now we've finally gotten a chance to see the team assembled on the set for the very first time.
The photos showing the full team together appear to have been snapped between takes, but they still offer a great look at what the Avengers look like in their civilian identities — Thor may look like he's wearing his "superhero costume," but that's simply standard attire for the god of thunder. They also show how the actors and the characters they play physically stack up against one another (the fact that Ruffalo is the smallest one in the group gives whole new meaning to the term "short man's complex" in light of the fact that his character turns into a 9-foot-tall behemoth when he gets ticked off).
