Happy Birthday, Star Trek! [video]

It was 45 years ago today that TV audiences were first taken where no man had gone before with the debut of Star Trek. The original series had relatively low Nielsen ratings and was canceled after three seasons, but the franchise still managed to become an overwhelming success. Since then, the original series has spawned four more live-action series, an animated series, eleven movies (with one more on the way), hundreds of novels, short stories and comic books, board, video and role-playing games, and tons of merchandise (including a marshmallow dispenser and a talking lunchbox). In addition, a 184 acre, billion dollar plus Star Trek resort is currently underway in Jordan and set to open in 2014. But why is it so big? Wouldn't they just need a handful of holodecks?
In honor of the anniversary, SCIENCE posted a clip from their upcoming Trek Nation, a documentary that follows Rod Roddenberry on a journey to learn more about his father, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.
The documentary will premiere on SCIENCE November 11.
