Who Is Marion Cotillard Playing in The Dark Knight Rises?

When Marion Cotillard was officially confirmed to reunite with her Inception director Christopher Nolan for his third and final Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, way back in April, Cotillard was reportedly playing Wayne Industries board member Miranda Tate, a character that does not exist in the comic books. However, rumors persist that Cotillard's Tate is not all that she seems to be.
In August, Cotillard was spotted in "spy" set photos wearing an outfit that more closely resembles a member of the League of Shadows, the organization of assassins led by Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson) in Batman Begins. The outfit led many to assume that the name "Miranda Tate" was a ruse for Cotillard's character, who, in fact, was more likely al Ghul's daughter, Talia. Why else would "Miranda Tate" be surrounded by men carrying machine guns and dressed in military camouflage and be seen getting into one of Batman's Tumblers (or Bat-mobile)? Remember, Neeson didn't identify himself as Ra's while he was mentoring Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), only revealing himself once Wayne had established himself as Batman. Of course, Tate could also just be a really involved board member as well.
If Mranda Tate is indeed Talia al Ghul, Cotillard isn't saying. While attending the premiere of Contagion, Cotillard told MTV that her character "was not based on a character of the comic." When asked again if she was telling the truth, Cotillard insisted, "Yes, I am."
Whether Cotillard is telling the truth or lying is unknown, since she wouldn't say anything else. She did say that she was "so happy" to "work on Christopher Nolan's set" and that she "could do tons of movies with him." Should Cotillard be covering for the movie and trying to keep her identity a secret, she may have secured her place in the cast for Nolan's next movie.
