Cloud Atlas: Hugo Weaving and Halle Berry Spotted on the Sci-Fi Epic Set in Glasgow

Glasgow, Scotland, seems to be the new hot spot for big studio productions. Christopher Nolan shot scenes for The Dark Knight Rises in Glasgow this summer, and the Caledonian city recently doubled as Pittsburgh, PA, during the filming of Marc Forster's World War Z adaptation. Now, Glagow is playing host to Cloud Atlas, a sci-fi epic co-written and co-directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix) and German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, The International). Cloud Atlas started filming last week and already the first "spy" photos have emerged from the set, revealing Hugo Weaving and a be-wigged Halle Berry.
Cloud Atlas is based on David Mitchell's award-winning 2004 sci-fi novel of the same name. The story is comprised of six interconnected storylines, each set in a different time and place, from 19th-Century Australia to a post-apocalyptic future Hawaii. Here's the official movie synopsis.
An epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution.
The Cloud Atlas production will spend the majority of the shoot — "some 80 percent" according to producer Stefan Arndt (The White Ribbon) — at Germany's famous Studio Babelsberg, but the Wachowskis and Tykwer are supposedly shooting "parallel to each other using two separate film crews," so it's likely that filming is currently underway in Germany, as well. It has not been confirmed, but it is believed that the Wachowskis will be shooting the sci-fi scenes, while Tykwer focuses on the period scenes.
The Wachowskis and Tykwer have assembled a cast for Cloud Atlas that is nearly as epic as the story itself. In addition to Weaving and Berry, the cast includes Hugh Grant, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent, Keith David, Ben Whishaw Tom Hanks, and Susan Sarandon. The movie does not yet have a release date.
