Jessica Chastain is on fire. In just 2011 alone, she has starred in or will yet star in seven (!) features, sharing screen time with the likes of Al Pacino (Wilde Salmoe), Sam Worthington (The Debt), Brad Pitt (The Tree of Life) and Ralph Fiennes (Coriolanus), and she's already completed work on two other movie that are in post-production. Now, Variety has reported that Chastain has landed one of the two leading female roles opposite Tom Cruise in Horizons (formerly Oblivion), a new sci-fi epic from the mind of Joseph Kosinski, director of last year's Tron: Legacy.
Kosinski began working on the story that eventually became Horizons well before landing his first feature directing gig with Disney on the sequel to Tron. The story takes place on a future Earth that has been devastated by the arrival of an alien species. The remnants of humanity live high up in the clouds, while robot drones patrol the surface for aliens. When a soldier named Jack (Cruise) discovers a woman inside a crash-landed escape pod, he begins to question his mission and his very identity.
It was not revealed whether Chastain will play Julia, the woman Jack discovers in the escape pod, or if she will be playing Victoria, Jack's partner and lover. The other actresses who have supposedly tested for the two roles along with Chastain include Olivia Wilde, Brit Marling, Noomi Rapace and Olga Kurylenko. William Monahan (The Departed) and Karl Gadjusek wrote the screenplay adaptation of Kosinski's original story, with a polish by Michael Arndt.
