Competitive birding — the observation and identification of birds within a specified time or area for monetary gain or simply bragging rights — may not seem like an activity with obvious comedic potential, but when the cast includes the likes of Owen Wilson, Steve Martin, and Jack Black there's sure to be plenty of yuks to go around.
In director David Frankel's (The Devil Wears Prada, Marley & Me) new movie, The Big Year, the trio of funnymen play fanatical birders competing to spot the greatest number of bird species in a year in which El Nino has sent a large variety of breeds into the U.S. Each of the men is competing for different reasons, but they all soon come to realize there are more important things than winning the competition. The theatrical trailer was released a few weeks ago and now four new preview clips have debuted online, offering a better explanation of the competition and a brief introduction to Kenny (Wilson), Stu (Martin), and Brad (Black).
The Big Year was written by Howard Franklin (The Man Who Knew Too Little) and is based on Mark Obmascik's 1998 novel The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession. Rashida Jones, Rosamund Pike, Anthony Anderson, Kevin Pollak, Tim Blake Nelson, Joel McHale, and Angelica Houston also star.
