In spite of the fact that the 2011 Sundance Film Festival press screening of director Mark Pellington's (Henry Poole is Here) new movie, I Melt With You, resulted in what New York Magazine (NYM) described as a "moviegoer exodus," speculatively attributed to the "movie's constant drug-taking, which is so immense that the characters may have more lines of coke than lines of dialogue," Magnolia Pictures picked up the distribution rights to the movie and will be releasing it On Demand on Nov. 4, before its limited theatrical run on Dec. 9.
Written by Glenn Porter, I Melt With You stars Rob Lowe, Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven and Christian McKay as four former high school friends who reunite at a summer beach house to, as NYM puts it, "do drugs, cry and scream about their midlife crises, and do more drugs." Watch the new Red Band trailer and see for yourself why some have labeled the movie "a work of extreme self-indulgence," and others have praised it as "a perfectly cast film" that delivers "a profoundly moving experience.".
Richard (Thomas Jane), Ron (Jeremy Piven), Jonathan (Rob Lowe) and Tim (Christian McKay) are old college friends that gather annually for a week in Big Sur to celebrate their friendship and catch-up on each other’s lives. They seem like typical men in their forties — all with careers, families, and enormous responsibilities — but like most people there is a lot more beneath the surface.
As the week progresses, they go down the rabbit hole of excess as mountains of drugs are consumed to a blaring rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack. Parties with much younger women spin out of control. Exhausted and run ragged, they bare their souls to one another revealing the disillusionment with their lives. As the truth emerges, the reunion takes a much darker turn when a promise from their past is brought to light. From director Mark Pellington, I Melt With You is a visually dazzling, wild and wooly trip deep into the male psyche, driven by four amazingly committed and profound performances.
