CONFIRMED: Patty Jenkins Will Direct Thor 2; Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Natalie Portman Will Reprise Their Roles

When it was first rumored that Marvel Studios was adding Patty Jenkins' (Monster) name to the list of directors in the running to take the helm of the sequel to this year's Thor, a position left vacant when award-winning director Kenneth Branagh decided not return for another round of Asgardian superhero action, many scoffed at the idea because her resume was much lighter on action than candidates like James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin) and Brian Kirk (HBO's Game of Thrones).
However, almost immediately after the rumor began spreading, Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, said that Jenkins had a "great take on the story and a solid grasp on that kind of universe," which made it seem like the rumor had quite a bit of truth to it. Then, last week, Joshua Dallas, who played Thor's comrade-in-arms, Fandral the Dashing, in Thor, said that "Jenkins is directing" Thor 2 and that the people at Marvel are "in love with her."
Now, Marvel Studios has made it official, sending out a concise press release confirming Jenkins as director and announcing that Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Academy Award-winner Natalie Portman will return as Thor, Loki and Jane Foster, respectively, in the sequel.
Marvel Studios announced today that Patty Jenkins will direct Thor 2, which will be released in theatres on Friday, November 15, 2013. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman will return to star in the film along with Tom Hiddleston. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce the sequel to this summer’s blockbuster Thor, which has grossed over $448 million worldwide to date.
Patty Jenkins previously directed Monster starring Charlize Theron, who won an Academy Award® for her performance in the film. Jenkins, who received an Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of AMC’s acclaimed series The Killing, has also directed episodes of Entourage and Arrested Development. Most recently, she directed "Pearl," one of the five short films that comprise Lifetime’s original movie Five.
In addition to Thor 2, Marvel Studios is currently scheduled to release Marve's The Avengers on May 4, 2012, and Iron Man 3 which is slated for release on May 3, 2013.
Jenkins is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Alan Wertheimer.
