Casting News: Nicolas Cage Joins Black Butterfly; Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker and More Join The Last Stand

Nicolas Cage would appear to be in at least half of the upcoming thrillers in line for release: Trespass currently playing in theaters, Seeking Justice awaiting a U.S. release date, and Medallion in post-production. Unsatisfied, Cage has added yet another thriller to his resume.
THR reports that Cage has been cast in the psycho-thriller Black Butterfly, alongside German actress Veronica Ferres. Cage will play a reclusive writer named Paul who goes against age-old advice and befriends a drifter which, for some reason, doesn't end well.
Based on a French TV thriller titled Papillon Noir, Black Butterfly will start production early next year in eastern Germany, which is appropriate since German production outfit Bavariapool is producing the movie for a mere $13 million, which means that Cage isn't picking the movie to help pay for his recent financial troubles, but will keep him out of the country for a few more months. Actor Brian Goodman, who made his directorial debut on 2008's What Doesn't Kill You, will direct the movie.

. According to a press release
revealed by Cinema Blend
, production on the movie started earlier this week, and has finalized its cast with four new additions, after steadily adding cast members over the past month.
The new additions include Johnny Knoxville (Jackass 3D), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Harry Dean Stanton (Alien, The Green Mile) and Luis Guzman (Boogie Nights), though all of their roles are unspecified. As for what The Last Stand will be about, a synopsis was released in July, the essence of which is that Schwarzenegger will play the sheriff of a sleepy border town who is forced to stop a ruthless, escaped drug kingpin (Eduardo Noriega) and his gang before they can escape to Mexico.
The cast of The Last Stand includes Jaimie Alexander (Thor), Rodrigo Santoro (300), Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) and Swedish actor Peter Stormare (Fargo, Armageddon). Ji-woon Kim (The Good, the Bad, the Weird) is directing the movie, which was written by Andrew Knauer, Jeffrey Nachmanoff (Traitor) and George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum). The Last Stand opens in theaters on Jan. 18, 2013.
