A new sci-fi action tentpole from the creators of The Matrix trilogy? Yes, please!
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has given the green light to an original creation by Andy and Lana Wachowski called Jupiter Ascending that could go into production by as early as Spring 2012. Nothing is known about the plot and no cast members have been hired as of yet, but considering the incredible impact The Matrix had and continues to have on cinema and pop culture in general we are already sold on whatever the movie is about and whomever they end up casting in it.
It may have seemed like the Wachowskis fell off the face of the Earth following the debacle that was 2008's Speed Racer, but they've actually been hard at work on a number of projects. Last spring, they circulated a script that they hoped to direct that would have been an R-rated love story about a gay U.S. soldier who has a relationship with an Iraqi. That movie never found any takers, however, and they moved on to the currently-in-production adaptation of David Mitchell's award-winning 2004 sci-fi novel Cloud Atlas that they co-wrote and and are co-directing with German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, The International).
Cloud Atlas is being shot concurrently in Scotland and Germany and the ambitious story is comprised of six interconnected storylines, each set in a different time and place, from 19th-Century Australia to a post-apocalyptic future Hawaii. The Wachowskis and Tykwer have assembled an impressive cast for the sci-fi drama, including Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent, Keith David, Ben Whishaw and Academy Award-winners Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon and Halle Berry. It does not yet have a release date.
