With director Tarsem Singh's (The Cell) new movie, Immortals, opening in theaters in less than three weeks, Relativity Media and Universal Pictures have ramped up the promotional campaign for the swords-and-sandals epic. In the past week, the studios have released a large selection of high-quality still images that show off the movie's lush, extravagant costumes and set pieces; a new character featurette focused on the hero of the movie, Theseus (Henry Cavill), who was chosen by the Olympian god Zeus (Luke Evans) to defend humanity from the threat of the mad Titan King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke); and a preview clip from the movie that proves Rourke can deliver a performance that is both menacing and powerful without having to rely on much more than his voice.
Outcast. Warrior. Savior. In the new character featurette, Singh, Cavill, and Evans explain the background and motivations of Theseus and introduce us to Theseus' mentor, the "Old Man" (John Hurt), who is actually Zeus in mortal form. The featurette is short, but it is quite informative and includes footage from the movie not seen in any previous trailers or clips.
In this first preview clip, a traitor tries to defect to Hyperion's side, offering him women, slaves and weapons in exchange for his loyalty, but all Hyperion desires is the Epirus Bow, a weapon forged by the Olympian god of war, Ares (Daniel Sharman), that will give him the power to dominate not only the mortal world, but the immortal world of Zeus' Olympus.
Immortals was produced by Mark Canton (300), Gianni Nunnari (300), and Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter). The cast includes Isabel Lucas as Athena, Kellan Lutz as Poseidon, Freida Pinto as Phaedra, Stephen Dorff as Stavros, Corey Sevier as Apollo, Steve Byers as Heracles and Robert Maillet as the Minotaur.
