Tom Cruise Discusses His Casting in One Shot

Fans of author Lee Child's 15-volume series of novels centering around former Military Police Officer-turned-drifter Jack Reacher had to be more than a little surprised when they learned that Tom Cruise had been cast in the role of Reacher in Paramount Pictures' adaptation of One Shot. While Cruise has proved himself as an action star over the years, Reacher is described in Child's novels as 6'5" and 250 pounds, which makes the character quite a bit larger than Cruise.
With production on One Shot starting in Pittsburgh, Cruise is aware of the fan concerns, admitting to Empire that he was "very sensitive" of the physical differences between himself and the character but was given Child's "blessing" to play the part.
Firstly, I'm very sensitive to it. This is Lee's book and Lee's character. Him giving me his blessing is what made me do it. If he hadn't then I wouldn't have done it.
Lee told me that the reason he wrote him that size is because that was just one element to his character, and that opened the door to me playing him
Actually the ninth book in the series, OneShot could be another movie franchise for Cruise, a possibility that the actor doesn't seem to be against.
Reacher is such a great character. He doesn't have a cell phone, he doesn't have email. He's off the grid. He pays for things in cash. People look at things through the prism of the colors of their life, but Jack Reacher does things the way we want to sometimes. In that sense he's sort of a Dirty Harry, a James Bond, a Josey Wales.
One Shot sees Reacher investigating the deaths of five individuals whom were all killed by a lone sniper. Defense attorney Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike) joins Reacher to help bring the real culprits to justice after an innocent man is charged with the murders. Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote Valkyrie and The Usual Suspects, will adapt the screenplay as well as direct, his first movie since the 2000 crime drama The Way of the Gun. Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins (Let Me In) and David Oyelowo (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) co-star.
