Casting News: Joel Edgerton in 300 Sequel; John Goodman Joins the Coen Brothers' Latest; RZA in Django Unchained

Joel Edgerton proved his acting chops in last year's critically–acclaimed, Aussie import Animal Kingdom, but Stateside, the actor has been cast more in action movie roles such as The Thing, Warrior and the upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Ok, scratch that last one.
Edgerton's latest action role could be in the 300 sequel, 300: Battle of Artemisia (formerly Xerxes). Vulture reports that Edgerton is in talks to play Themosticles, the famed Athenian archon and general who led the Greeks to victory against the invading Persians in the Battle of Artemisium, which again saw a smaller Greek fleet go up against a stronger Persian navy. The fight took place during "the exact same three days" as as The Battle of Thermopylae, which was the inspiration for the first 300.
300 director Zack Snyder and his screenwriting partner Kurt Johnstad wrote the script for the sequel, which is again based on a forthcoming graphic novel by Frank Miller. Israel-born director Noam Murro (Smart People) will direct the movie, while Gerard Butler and Lena Headey will reportedly reprise their 300 roles of Leonidas, king of the Spartans, and Queen Gorgo, respectively.
has already appeared in several movies for Joel
and Ethan Coen
, starting with 1987's Raising Arizona
and most infamously as the Dude's confidant and bowling team member Walter in 1998's The Big Lebowski
. The Coens' latest project, titled Inside Llewyn Davis
, would be the trio's latest collaboration.
Showbiz 411 reports that Goodman is set to star in the movie, which is loosely based on the life of Dave van Ronk, an American folk singer who was a part of the 1960s folk scene in Greenwich Village.
Goodman will join a cast that includes Oscar Isaac (Sucker Punch), playing the lead role; Carey Mulligan (Drive) and, possibly, Justin Timberlake (The Social Network). Variety reported earlier this week that Timberlake had been offered a role in the movie, and, should he accept, he will play another musician who is married to Mulligan.
Production is set to begin early next year in New York.
Rapper-turned-actor RZA is the latest to join the cast of writer-director Quentin Tarantino's next movie, Django Unchained, Variety reports.
Described as a "Southern" because it combines the Western with a story about a freed slave (Jamie Foxx) who is attempting to rescue his wife (Kerry Washington) from a sadistic slave owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). RZA will play Thaddeus, a violent slave who works on the Mississippi plantation. This is the second time RZA will work with Tarantino, having written the score for both Kill Bill movies.
RZA joins a cast that includes Kurt Russell as brutal slave trainer Ace Woody, Laura Cayouette (Kill Bill, Vol. 2) as DiCaprio's widowed sister, Don Johnson as a wealthy plantation owner named Spencer Bennett, Samuel L. Jackson as Candie's valet, Stephen, and Christoph Waltz as the German bounty hunter that trains Django in his trade. The Variety report claims that Misty Upham (Frozen River) has also been cast as a trading post-bar owner named Minnie.
Django Unchained opens on December 25, 2012.
