The careers of at least two hot young Hollywood actors could be headed in an upward trajectory very soon. According to THR, casting sessions for Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way-produced Akira adaptation for Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox's fifth Die Hard movie, A Good Day to Die Hard, will be held within the next couple of weeks and both projects are looking to turn relative unknowns into future stars.
In development for three years, Akira got the greenlight from Warner Bros. last month after Appian Way brought on Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) to direct and Steve Kloves (Harry Potter) to "polish" the script. No time was wasted in finding the principal cast members, with Garrett Hedlund currently in negotiations to star as the hero, Shotaro Kaneda, and offers going out to Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter to play supporting characters The Colonel and Lady Miyako, respectively.
Now, the search is on for the antagonist of the movie, Tetsuo Shima, a troubled young man who becomes a malevolent monster when he gains incredible psychic powers. THR reports that casting for the part will be held on Tuesday and that Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro) are the actors whose names are "surfacing most often" related to the screening. The movie does not yet have a start or release date, but it is expected to begin shooting in late February or early March.
Fox is also preparing to test a group of young actors to play another troubled young man in A Good Day to Die Hard, which picked up Max Payne director John Moore in September and was officially given a February 14, 2013, release date last month. According to THR, the studio will begin seeing actors to play the part of John McClane, Jr., the son of series star Bruce Willis' character, John McClane, on November 12th and test for two days.
Though not the villain of the movie as with Tetsuo in Akira, John Jr. plays a pivotal role in A Good Day to Die Hard because his arrest in Russia is connected to an incident that leads to to a terrorist plot with global implications. According to THR, the "frontrunners" for the role include Liam Hemsworth (upcoming The Hunger Games), Aaron Paul (The Last House on the Left remake) and Ben Foster (The Mechanic), though it is apparently "Hemsworth's to lose." The actors will screen opposite Willis to test their chemistry with the veteran actor. Fox is aiming for a 2012 start date for the movie.
