After winning a Lead Actor Emmy for his role as Bobby Kennedy in the Reelzchannel miniseries The Kennedys, Barry Pepper has lined up roles in the noir drama Broken City and the action thriller Snitch. Both movies are shooting simultaneously in Louisiana.
20th Century Fox's Broken City stars Mark Wahlberg as a Brooklyn detective hired by the mayor (Russell Crowe) to investigate his wife's indiscretions only to discover a deeper conspiracy when the wife's lover is found dead. Variety reports Pepper has been cast as a mayoral candidate who runs against Crowe's character.
Production on Broken City begins this month. Allen Hughes (The Book of Eli) is directing a script written by newcomer Brian Tucker. Catherine Zeta-Jones co-stars.
Snitch will see Pepper play a DEA agent who works with a suburban father (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) who has agreed to go undercover to gather evidence against a drug dealer in order to keep his teenage son from serving a 10-year jail sentence. Susan Sarandon was cast in September as an ambitious U.S. attorney working to convict the drug dealer.
Ric Roman Waugh (Felon) is directing a script he rewrote, originally scripted by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road) and based on a Frontline documentary.
Once Pepper finishes work on both movies, he will start work on The Lone Ranger.
Director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) is getting closer to finally casting the lead role in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., his remake of the '60s TV series of the same name.
Initially offered to George Clooney, the stunt work involved in the movie forced the actor to turn down the role. The role was next offered to Bradley Cooper, but negotiations broke down for an undisclosed reason.
With Soderbergh looking to shoot the movie in February, Deadline reports the director may cast actor Channing Tatum, who is currently working with Soderbergh on Magic Mike and will appear in Soderbergh's upcoming Haywire.
While Tatum is not officially cast yet, it would seem that the actor could handle the stunt work involved in playing secret agent Napoleon Solo, who belongs to a secret international spy and law-enforcement agency called U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement). Expect a resolution soon.
