Jeremy Renner Offers Bourne Legacy Details

Ever since it was announced that Matt Damon would not be involved in the stand-alone Bourne spin-off The Bourne Legacy, fan response has ranged from "What's the point?" to "What would it even be about?", which is to say that not many have been too pleased about it. Of course, Damon and director Paul Greengrass were supposed to return for a fourth Bourne movie, but, according to screenwriter George Nolfi, after working on Green Zone both parties "wanted to do other things with their life".
Fair enough, but Universal clearly wasn't done making Bourne movies. Stepping in for Damon is Jeremy Renner, who won the role over more than a dozen possible contenders, and will play a separate agent with similar training as Bourne. Writer-director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton), who worked on the script for all three Bourne movies, wrote the script and is directing the movie.
The question remains, "who will Renner play?" and appropriately stepping up to answer the question is Renner, who spilled a few details about his character in a conversation with Empire.
My character is called Aaron Cross, but he ends up having a bunch of different names. For fans of the franchise, [The Bourne Legacy] has that same ticking clock, but it's a new program and new characters.
Renner says that Treadstone, the top-secret CIA black ops program that trained Bourne will indeed be involved. This seemed to be confirmed when it was announced that Albert Finney would reprise his The Bourne Ultimatum role as Operation Treadstone's behavior-modification expert Dr. Albert Hirsch.
"Yeah, it's that same deal," said Renner of Treadstone. "It's just a new set of agents with a different leash. It's the same tempo and pace but more expansive and bigger. The differences are pretty vast but you'll know it's a Bourne movie."
Also returning for Bourne Legacy is Joan Allen, reprising her Ultimatum and The Bourne Supremacy role of FBI Agent Pamela Landy. Edward Norton is set to play the movie's villain, while Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Sucker Punch) has been cast as brainwashed assassin "Number 3". Rachel Weisz will also appear in an unspecified role.
For those that are still having a hard time accepting a Bourne movie without Bourne, the character will reportedly be "still alive and out there in the world" during Legacy, allowing for Damon to one day return to the role should he choose to.
