Apparently, even stone-cold killers need love.
According to Deadline, two-time Academy Award-nominated actress Winona Ryder (Little Women, The Age of Innocence) has "committed to star" in The Iceman, director Ariel Vromen's (Rx) drama-thriller about the life of notorious mafia hitman Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski. Ryder will play Kuklinski's wife, Deborah, joining a cast that includes Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) as the title character, Chris Evans as Kuklinski's mentor, Robert "Mr. Softee" Pronge, and Benicio del Toro as Kuklinski’s boss, mobster Roy Demeo.
The Iceman was co-written by Vromen and Morgan Land, who also collaborated on the script for Rx with Vromen. The movie is based on the book The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer by Anthony Bruno and the documentary The Iceman Tapes: Conversations with a Killer by Jim Thebaut.
Here's the synopsis of the movie:
The Iceman is the electrifying true story of Richard Kuklinski (Shannon), a notorious mob contract killer and loving family man. He earned his nickname by freezing the bodies of his victims, disguising the time of death, and throwing police off-track. He was a man who used his tendencies toward violence and detachment from consequence to create an idyllic family life. His family and neighbors believed he was an average businessman, having no idea about his deadly alternate life. Kuklinski killed over one hundred people during his life. He never felt remorse for anything he had done, except hurting his family.
It should be noted that Vromen's The Iceman is one of two movies currently in development that are based on Kuklinski's life. The other, titled The Ice Man, is based on Phil Carlo's book about Kuklinski and has Mickey Rourke attached to star.
