Scarlett Johansson Talks Black Widow's Role in The Avengers and Iron Man 3

Despite having an ensemble of characters that so far have been used to being in their own movie, writer-director Joss Whedon has promised that no one in the cast of The Avengers will get lost in the shuffle. "We created a situation where everybody can be useful, and everybody can be in jeopardy, and they really can act as a team," Whedon revealed last month. "Even though — as we have known from the first issue of The Avengers comic — there's no reason for these people to be on the same team."
That said, while Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) appear often in the movie's first trailer, not every Avengers character got equal screen time, particularly Scarlett Johansson, who plays Black Widow, the lone female member of the group. In an interview with MTV, Johansson offered assurance that Black Widow will have a "great story" in the superhero movie.
There are a lot of people to serve in that one, for sure. The Widow has a great storyline. I think Joss did a brilliant job of weaving together all these characters’ storylines. It was no small feat for him.
Johansson says that Widow even gets "gritty" in The Avengers.
I love the Widow, I have to say. I think she's got a really interesting journey. She's definitely not a push-over. We get gritty, we get real gritty in this, so there's a lot to look forward to. And we'll see — you never know, especially when you have a big film like this. It could be six hours squashed down into something that's, whatever — 90 minutes or however long it is — you know, you wonder what is going to be sacrificed there so, you know... fingers crossed?
Johansson made her debut as Black Widow in Iron Man 2, but isn't sure she will continue as the character in Iron Man 3, the next Marvel Studios movie to follow The Avengers.
I have no idea. I have not had that discussion. But hopefully, I'll be, you know — I don’t know if I can get that latex suit on so soon after finishing Avengers. I need to take a little breather from the latex suit for a minute, eat some real cheese, then get back into it.
Should Johansson want to know if Black Widow made it into the script or not, she merely need to ask her Avengers co-star Robert Downey Jr., who has admitted to reading the script from director Shane Black and co-writer Drew Pearce, calling it "the best I've read in five years".
The Avengers opens on May 4, 2012, while Iron Man 3 opens on May 3, 2013.
